Walshaw Academy of Music

Katie Walshaw is the Owner and Operator of the Walshaw School of Music. Katie is a voice, piano, and theory teacher who has been teaching in the Brantford area for almost 20 years. She holds a Bachelor of Music from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo (2010), specializing in theory and voice, a Master’s of Arts (2012) and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (2018), both specializing in Music Theory from The University of Western Ontario. Katie also holds Grade Eight certificates in voice and piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music and is a Registered Music Teacher with the Ontario Registered Music Teacher’s Association (Hamilton/Halton Branch).

Katie grew up in Brantford and was very fortunate to have wonderful exposure to music in both elementary and high school. She spent five years singing with the Brant County Youth Singers where she had the opportunity to travel across Canada and even to perform at Walt Disney World. Katie is a core member of Ron Beckett’s Arcady, with whom she performs regularly and frequently appears as a featured soloist. She also works as a mentor for young singers and a coach for the Emerging Artists program. Katie has performed with a number of different choirs including The Renaissance Singers of KW as both a soloist and a chorister, The Grand River Chorus, and the Laurier Singers. She also sings in the fully professional choir The Edison Singers where she has performed as a featured soloist. Katie studied voice at Laurier with Dr. Daniel Cabena and studied piano in Brantford with Norah Langton and Cheryl Spragg.

Katie teaches voice, music theatre, and piano. She teaches all age ranges from beginner to advanced to adult students. Katie teaches both recreational and competitive students and emphasizes the importance of performance opportunities for her students.

Katie also specializes in teaching music theory. She teaches all levels of theory from rudiments through to ARCT Harmony and Analysis. Theory is a critical part of any well-rounded musical education and a necessary component of advanced certificates from the RCM.

Teachers at the Walshaw Music Studio work closely together providing workshops, masterclasses, coachings, and other collaborative opportunities for our students.
